An introduction to the unique, digital-age Activated Classroom Teaching (ACT) approach
An introduction to HTML5 and an overview of the course
We will be using the sublime text editor in this course. In this video we explain to you how to get the editor and also the basics of using it as an HTML editor.
HTML can be seen as a skeleton that gives structure to webpages. In this lesson we take a first look at the skeleton - It's not use having skeletons in the cupboard
HTMLi is all about <tags> - and so in this lesson we get to grips with tags and how they work.
It's time to draw the first section together, and get your busy.
As we have said before, learning on this course is based on the ACT model. Key to this approach is you being active and involved. At the end of the next section we will have you creating your own website. However, at the moment we would also like you to learn through Curation, Conversation and Correction. So, participate in the activity outlined here, and in the quiz that comes next.
Also not that there is a downloadable PDF summary of this section that is useful to print out and keep as a handy brainjogging reference!
There is loads of exciting stuff coming up in the next section....If we were you, we would hardly be able to sit still with excitement :-)
While <br> and <p> tags, which were covered in the previous lesson, provide basic formatting, the <ul> and <ol> tags allow us to created bulleted and numbered lists, and provide more control over our layout.
The <p> and <br> tags are key to helping you arrange content on your webpage. In this lecture we will see how you used them.
Tables are the secret behind most pages. You may think that tables are like what appears in a spreadsheet, but without the lines, tables are a clever way of arranging content on a webpage. This lesson explores how to use basic tables to layout your webpage.
Images make our webpages come alive. In this lesson we will look at how images can be added with HTML.
All pages - even the one you are viewing now, is controlled by HTML. This is why learning HTML is like unlocking the language of the web. We will look at how you can easily view the source HTML behind any page. Go on...give it a try for this page!
Recap time - a summary of what you have learned in this section. Be sure to download the attached PDF summary of this section. It provides a useful, easy-to-remember summary of what you have learned.
You aint seen nothing yet...Section 3 is taking our HTML adventure to the next level!
In this lesson we will decide on a theme for the website we are going to build - it's all about having a vision!
A logo makes a website look professional. How do you create one and how do you put it into your website? Well, that's exactly what you will be learning in this lesson.
It's images that make a website look good - but you can't simply use any images you happen to find with Google Image search. You need to make sure that they are royalty free, and can be used on your website, and what credit must be included. In this lesson we will show you the best place to get free, legal images for your website.
Using a combination of tables, images and text we can make appropriate text appear beneath our arranged images. Then we will look at how you can add a background image - this is an image that appears behind the text and continue, no matter how long the page is.
Reflecting your learning - that's what this conclusion and summary will do for you. Download the PDF, print it out - if it is not already printed out in your head - as it will be a great way to remember what you have learned.
Your are about to enter the final section....it's crazy. You have got this far, and the next section will bring it all together...let's do it!
It's time to create a second webpage, after all, a website is normally more than just one webpage. In this lesson we are going to create a second webpage.
As we begin to develop another webpage we will have a look at some workarounds that can help you with spacing issues - at least until you learn CSS
What's a website without a video. In this lesson we will show you how to get the embed code from a Youtube video and then insert this into your webpage so the video can be played from within the page.
Hyperlinks can be created using either text or images - we will explain how you can use both text and images to create links to other pages.
Summary of Section 4 - Yes, here it is. A PDF of what you have learned so that you will never forget!
The top of the learning ladder
This course has used a combination of teaching approaches based around the Activated Classroom Teaching approach. The idea is that the more active you are, the more you will learn. If you simply watched the videos (consumption) you will have learned something. But if you got involved in the active learning opportunities - curation, conversation, correction, and creation - you will potentially double the amount you remember.
So, we have given you many ways to learn - what remains is one more. If you are up to the challenge. Here's the challenge.
Chaos as a pedagogy (teaching approach) is the approach that requires the most from you, but is also the most rewarding. Chaos is learning to take too much content, confusing content, missing information, conflicting information, and distilling it down to something you can remember and makes sense. Now, that does not sound easy.
So, in this course you have learned a lot - but are you able to take everything and summarize it down into an easy to remember image? That's your challenge. Watch the video on how to use Canva to create an Infographic. Not only will this be a great way to distill your learning, it will be a fantastic memory aid too.
Be sure to share your Infographic in the Q&A forum.
You know the feeling...
In this lesson we answer a student's question about creating a hyperlink. We will show you how you can use a free online HTML editor to answer this question for yourself. Plus, we will show you how to better align text in your table using VALIGN.
